At LAB, we offer many different programs
and services. From referral and educational services to support
groups, we accomodate your needs.
Youth Program
- for blind and visually impaired children, ages 5 to 14, provides
social, educational and recreational activities on weekends such
as trips to the zoo, movies, beach, rock climbing and holiday events.
Funded through the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. For more

Sr. Youth Program
- for blind and visually impaired youth ages 15 to 21 meets for
social recreational and educational activities such as hay rides,
shopping, movies, career camp, holiday events. For more information

Adult
Programs - meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Lowell Association
for the Blind for variety of activities such as crafts, field trips,
guest speakers, community information and resources, cooking demonstrations
and adaptive equipment demonstrations. For more information contact

LAB/TIC Radio Reading Service - The Lowell Association for
the Blind and the Talking
Information Center is a special information radio station that
provides the reading of daily newspapers, by local volunteers. Newspapers
include the Lowell Sun, the Lawrence Eagle Tribune, the Nashua Telegraph,
Dracut Dispatch, the Chelmsford Independent and the Tewksbury Advocate.
Special receivers are available to pick up this station by contacting

LAB
Retrievers Baseball Team - Sighted and non-sighted individuals
play beep baseball with beeping baseballs and beeping bases. Each
year LAB encourages everyone at LAB including clients, staff and
volunteers to participate with the LAB Retrievers.
Low Vision and Adaptive
Equipment - Many
low vision and adaptive equipment items are available for use at
the LAB office. Including: use of color and black and white CCTV's
(closed circuit televisions), computer equipment and software such
as JAWS, ZoomText, and Duxbury, and Braille Embosser.
Assistance and catalogs
are available for ordering other specialized equipment such as magnifiers,
talking watches, talking calculators, etc.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Volunteers are an important part of the success of the Lowell
Association for the Blind. Some opportunities include:
Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to share their time and talents
in a variety of ways including helping with the Adult Drop-In Program,
Youth Programs and the Radio Reading Service.
- Volunteers provide
assistance with office tasks, answering telephones and greeting
guests.
- Volunteers provide
transportation to and from local events/training on an on-call
basis.
- Volunteers with special
talents are encouraged to come in and share their talents with
the adults or youth programs.
Center for the Blind
and Visually Impaired - Training programs for adaptive equipment,
computers, the internet and software programs are available on site.
- Braille training on site.
- One on one computer training available on site.
Awards - Each
year the Lowell Association for the Blind awards the George
E. Zermas Memorial Scholarship Award. The scholarship is
given annually at the Lowell Association for the Blind House Party
and is awarded to a student or students continuing their education
to work with the blind and visually impaired.
The
Etta P MacPhie Award is presented annually to a blind or
visually impaired individual for outstanding achievement.
